This week’s discussion point from me is about buoyancy aids. Buoyancy aids (BA’s), also known as personal flotation devices (PFD’s), are often the subject of hot debate with their marmite like-factor i.e. you either love them or you hate them! Which side of the argument are you and why? Does wearing a BA/PFD hold you back in your paddling or does it contribute towards it? Ever had any good or bad experiences as a result of either wearing or not wearing one? Would you ever compromise on looking flattering or fashionable over safety? BA’s/PFD’s come in all different shapes, sizes, designs and colours plus zips, pockets, pouches, safety features – the list goes on! But, have these features ever had any positive or negative impact or consequences for you? Do you struggle to find a BA that suits and fits you perfectly or as easy as buying a loaf of bread? What advice would you give to beginners in both the argument for wearing one and which one to ultimately go for? Share your thoughts, opinions, stories and experiences!
